Shadows and dust–that is all we are.
In a few months I will be 40 years old. I have long been aware that we live such a short time relative to the span of life on earth. Our existence is even smaller than the grain of sand of the shores of a beach. We move in and out of this world like dust in the wind or a shadow that is lost when the sun hides away.
A part of me feels the wonder of our presence here and how unique an opportunity it is to be alive and aware that we are alive. Yet at other times, I feel the overwhelming reality of how insignificant we are comparative to the grand universe.
I believe part of the secret of living a good life is to humbly recognize our place in the scheme of things. When we are able to imagine the vastness of time and space, and realize the trillion to one odds of being alive at this moment in time, in this place, and under these conditions, only then will we be able to move mountains. It is, I believe, the act of recognizing that we are nothing that we become great and inevitably transform into something significant.
Our longevity possibly depends more on how we view ourselves than all the technology we can create to give us comfort and access. What good is knowledge if we do not use it to evolve in every respect; spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, culturally and socially?
Even as shadows and dust, the essence of who we are will remain. We are unique. All that makes us human is worth every shadow that lingers on through the ages of our existence. And every piece of dust that essentially makes up our life force.
I learned something about shadows and dust, they are eternal. Even unseen, they are there, waiting to reappear. They are everywhere and in everything. We are mortal and immortal all at once. This is the comfort we seek. This is what will guide us to our destiny.
