having fun in the winter

IMG_2225 copy.JPGWinter fun is so rare given how cold it can get. But enjoying those rare winter moments with friends can warm not only the heart, but the body. Near my home is a large lake that spans my private community. Each year, there is some freezing over. But this year, given how particularly cold it was, the lake has frozen over for much longer than usual and remains fairly solid. So me and my friends ventured out onto the ice to test the ‘waters.

As I lay on the ice, she decided that I needed rescuing and should be pulled to shore. It was a blood pumping adventure that I would be able to share with my grandchildren…

Ok, ok. So that’s not exactly how it happened. I wanted to look up at the sky while laying on the ice, to see what the vastness looked like from a place I usually wouldn’t be able to see it from, unless of course I floated in the water on a hot summer day. But given the mucky nature of the water in some places, I don’t think that would have been much fun. So, I laid on the ice. Along comes my friend who decides she should pretend she is pulling me along. LOL. Too funny. Yes, silly, but funny.

We had a great time that day. Ice and all.

  1. Edward Weems says:

Dear Zaji, your comments on spirituality and nudity were well – fine as they were, but the photo of you affected me a rather predictable male way and so I stared for a long moment wishing only to know the woman in the picture and I told myself that if I ever did get to know her I’m sure her spirit would reveal itself to me at some point. In the meantime, the woman I saw would have kept me happily occupied.

I did manage to think a little about the subject matter however. Mostly because I was afraid you would think of me as this corporeal creature (which I am) and never speak to me again. At that point I decided like a school boy to go do my homework. However, I could not find anything which said what I truly thought about the subject of clothing and spirituality or nudity and spirituality that was not said better by Khalil Gibran in his work The Prophet when he wrote about clothing. I quote him here:

“Your clothes conceal much of your beauty, yet they hide not the unbeautiful.
And though you seek in garments the freedom of privacy you may find in them a harness and a chain.
Would that you could meet the sun and wind with more of your skin and less of your raiment,
For the breath of life is in the sunlight and the hand of life is in the wind.
    ***
Some of you say, “It is the north wind who has woven the clothes we wear.”
And I say, Ay, it was the north wind,
But shame was his loom, and the softening of the sinews was his thread.
And when his work was done he laughed in the forest.
Forget not that modesty is for a shield against th eye of the unclean.
And when the unclean shall be no more, what were modesty but a fetter and a fouling of the mind?
And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.”
    - Khalil Gibran
