sexuality: does spirit wear clothes?

Yes, that’s me. Don’t run. This is a serious discussion about sexuality, sexiness, and spirit.

Sexuality is such a touchy subject for some. But I’ve decided to venture into it fearlessly. Part of that adventure is to show that anything I say, I can back it up with action…hence the photo…which I believe is very tastefully done.

Let me define what sexuality is for me. Sexuality is not necessarily about sexual intercourse. Sexuality for me is more about the idea of what is sexy, the natural body and how we view it, and spirituality as it pertains to our sexual and/or reproductive abilities, including the process of nurturing offspring. I believe sexuality is much larger than the crass and canned definition employed by some. Sexuality is about our connection to the universe and how that connection affects us on this plane of existence. Sexuality is when I touch a rock and feel its warmth. It is when I smell a gardenia, an orange or a mango. Sexuality is a conversation that awakens something inside of me, bringing me to a new level of awareness. It is watching a new life suckle at my breast. It is laughter. It is engaging in life and all it’s beauty. Sexuality is me. It is you, it is us. It is everything earth and ether. It is naked truth. It is touch. It is love. This is how I view sexuality and the vein in which I will write.

There is a school of thought that says sexuality in general is a private affair and never to be discussed publicly. Others delineate what, specifically, should or should not be private when it comes to sexuality. I believe that all life is art, filled with something majestic, beautiful, sensual, magical, mysterious and profound. This life-art includes sexuality. And there is nothing private about it. It is like a beautiful painting, work of literature or piece of music…it tantalizes the senses to awareness. It awakens something sleeping within. It breathes life into things lifeless.

There was a time when wearing clothes was unheard of in nearly every ancient culture on earth. In some of those cultures, if one was seen with any type of covering, they were thought to be spiritually bereft. As a matter of fact, the majority of humans have spent far more time without clothes, than with clothes. This historical fact is worthy of note and not something we should dismiss as the simple behavior of “uncivilized” peoples. There is wisdom in the past, particularly within cultures that are the mothers of our existence.

Look at the picture I’ve posted of myself. What do you see? In this almost spiritless hodge-podge many call a culture, many Westernized minds would see a sex object–a woman who is possibly an exhibitionist and seeking the next hot sexual threesome, or just seeking attention. But those from other, more “simple” cultures, or those who are of a higher spiritual sensibility will see a woman sharing natural art…a woman who recognizes the beauty of her baby’s milk (her breasts), the beauty of birth and life, and is comfortable displaying her gift of natural essence handed to her from the universe. It shows a person at ease with nature in its purest form. In that image, I am 41 years old (taken a few months ago this year), and in it, I am feeling in touch not only with this cycle of my life, but the universal source. That image, for me, represents freedom, love, honesty, truth and nature. It is the image of my ancestors, their memories of who they were, their cycles gone…their dreams, beliefs and hopes for the future–the cycles to come…it represents a future not bogged down by the strange notions of this modern culture that has strayed from spirit and truth. This new, foreign culture is not from my ancestry. It is a strange thing.

Some will feel offended by this and spare no words to express their upset. But they would not spend that same energy on speaking out and taking action pertaining to the wars that ravage the lives of millions of people; nor rage against the air, food, earth and water being raped of every drop of nutritional value and life sustaining energy. They would make every attempt to shame me into submission and into removing my image, but in their cowardice, they would never call to the carpet, with the same fervor, their government or other entities that continue to destroy every semblance of what many hold dear. Their life could be falling apart, yet they would still choose the easy victory of harassing me about a picture that celebrates sensuality, sexuality, art, beauty, nature, love and life.

What am I trying to prove with this image you may ask? I want to show that people are not as adaptable as they’d like to believe themselves to be. I want to show that there will be those who saw me one way yesterday, and will now see me a different way today because of what they’ve been trained to believe. I want to show that delving into the perceived touchy space of sexuality does not change who I am spiritually. I am still the same person who strives endlessly for truth and an understanding of self. I continue to seek a higher self, whether through writing, reading, meditation, or visual artistic expression. My spirit does not wear clothes. It breathes freely. It is naked save for the essence of who I am and what I am–and that essence is not made of cotton, silk or wool.

Some will ask, so does that mean we should all walk around naked? I ask, weren’t people doing it for hundreds of thousands of years, even into today in untainted villages? Being fully clothed is a recent historical incarnation. And somewhere along the line we were made to feel uncomfortable about something that is as natural as drinking water. But does this mean we should all go naked you’ll ask again? That is not for me to decide. I am in a culture that has a host of hang ups. So save for my private space online, I doubt there will be a collective space, anytime soon, for us to truly move back in time and recapture a long period in history where nature truly ruled within the human species. Nature is no longer given the respect it deserves. Sexuality now gets relegated to some obscure idea that no longer seems attached to nature or truth. It is separated as a lower thing, not deserving of serious discussion and attention. Why? Could it be that those who have no regard for it have turned it into something ugly and dirty? Is it religious fervor? It is like manipulating people one day into believing that the rose is the ugliest flower on earth. All flowers for that matter would be made to seem like disgusting things not meant to be discussed in public. They would be hidden away, made private…nasty little things that might make people do nasty little things. But flowers have not yet suffered that fate. Our sexuality and naked bodies have. Sexuality needs to be left alone to be what it is, without hinderance–natural.

My body is art. Your body is art. Our bodies are nature in all its purity. We are reproductive energy…food…life. Just as we take pictures of flowers without questioning why we need to, so too should we feel comfortable photographing our natural bodies, without questioning why we need to. We photograph mountains, trees, rocks, rivers, oceans, animals, and proudly display them on our walls, but then question the photographing of our natural selves. And when this photographing is done in many off the beaten path mediums, it is often treated with vulgarity, rather than respect…and photographed in a way that shows this gross disregard for the beauty of the natural body. Those with little regard and respect for our beauty bastardize it rather than praise it and present it with a reverence fit for goddesses. My image honors me and it honors those who honor and respect the human body in all its naturalness.

There is nothing about any part of us that should be treated with shame, or disrespected and presented disrespectfully. We were made by the universe, a universe filled with infinite possibilities and infinite creations. Our bodies are glorious and divine creations, like a flower, tree, rock or jewel, all naked creations filled with sexual creative potential. Our bodies are the undulating oceans of the planet…the strong and proud mountains that move about the earth even as they seem unmoved. We are the trees, free to allow the wind to move through us, around us and within us, unhindered, uncovered, primitive.

I am art. You are art. We are sexual art. Allow this knowledge to set you free. Spirt runs naked through the universe, follow it.

  3. Matt says:

I agree with you Sis. People have ideas on what is sexy based on the level of manipulation their minds are in. Everything that is natural was made to seem un-natural or indecent based upon someone’s need to control the masses. Everything is sexy in it’s own way. When we look at each other we see whatever our mind defines what is sexy. Often times i might see a woman that i find to be very sexy that others don’t. I usually see the way she walks, talks, or simply carries herself as sexy where others are looking for a more physical type of sexiness. I try to deal in the Metaphysical with people and all things. You should write an entire book on this and use that picture as the cover -LOL

Can I be like you when I grow up?

Woman to woman, you are an example of an amazing soul not afraid to challenge the bullshit of mainstream society. It is so refreshing to read the viewpoint of someone who refuses to be further tainted by a faux reality that judges those who see through the veil of lies and deceit. The leader of all this manufactured spirituality that so many lost sheep would like to associate themselves with, the Church of Bullshit. With a con-artist Pope for a spiritual guide, these are the people who like to creep in the shadows doing all types of sexual deeds that few of us have the balls to openly enjoy. While they condemn those willing to explore all true levels of spirituality – regardless of where it may take us – these are the ones passing judgments and executions.

I want to thank you for bringing this topic to life and the forefront. Thank you for having the courage to not only introduce the world to you in truth and love, but to challenge the hypocrites to speak on what the true issues are. Challenge them on how they are brain-washed into thinking that their manufactured reality is the true way. Like those in “Brave New World” who were created lost and made to believe they were “open-minded.” I laugh at them all and in awe of your awareness to this scam called a society; give you a standing ovation.

  10. M. King says:

I believe we are eternal Spiritual beings having temporary physical experiences. These bodies we inhabit allow our Spirit selves to have physical mobility. We should not be hung up on them or see the naked opposite sex nude in purely physical, sexual terms. Because we live in Western society, we have to cover up these physical bodies and this makes seeing nude women something that is taboo. It shouldn’t be that way but we are not ready to be a naked country (at least in the warmer weather!) As a poet and playwright who is grounded in metaphysics, I’m always expanding the consciousness of the reader/listener. We should have more dialogs on this subject of sexuality and its expression. I’m sure my friend Pittershawn will write further on it expanding what she has written here and I appreciate her ideas. She is a writer to be treasured!

Who’s gonna run, sis? You’re beautiful. And I agree with all you’ve said. Spirit does not wear clothes or have a sexual preference because It’s pure energy. Making the body seem disgusting and bad is a way for perverts to control themselves. The body has done nothing wrong, and sharing it isn’t wrong, but of course, that’s a spiritual perspective not a dogmatic, religious one!

Pittershawn, I admire your sexual boldness, your fluidity of ideas and concepts, and your elastic sensuality. Combining the flesh, the soul, and the spirit is something that is very difficult to do. Very few people achieve it. I’ve tried to venture down a path that sought a union of tolerance, acceptance, and courage. Sometimes I hit it down on target and other times I bow to my old worn Christian ideals. You have made peace with yourself and are comfortable in your skin. Praise be! As Lisabet Sarai, the noted writer in Thailand, once wrote: “Passion and joy are what cleanses the soul and spirit.”

  13. Bold. Beautiful. Awesome. Inspiring. Insightful. I have always enjoyed your writing, but this dynamic piece, accompanied by such an in-your-face image, has to be the best to illustrator Kahil Gibran’s words: Beauty is not in the face; Beauty is a light in the heart or even Albert Einstein’s: Our task must be to free ourselves…by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the wholeness of nature and its beauty. I embrace you, I embrace myself and I embrace all that is.

I’m not nearly as deep and cerebral as most of the other respondents to this blog. Here’s the little I do know. Not all nudity is sexual. Not all images qualify as art. The photo above this column is definitely both. It says more about me than it does about you that my initial response was of carnal, not aesthetic, appreciation. Speaking as a formally educated studio artist (the major in which I earned my bachelor’s degree from Rutgers) whose most mind-expanding course as an undergrad was Sexuality in Art History, as well as a fully functioning and sexually responsive straight black male, all I can say is: WOW.

    Preach, Ms. P.!

When we believe that we are bodies, rather than made-in-the-image-of-God spirit, and we believe that we are alive when our bodies have breath and dead after our bodies take their last breath, our perception of who and what we are is distorted. Sadly, that distortion causes us to create skin-deep dramas on planet Earth that hurt ourselves and other visitors to this plane. Thanks for poetically and picturesquely speaking the eternal Truth about you–and us.

  17. Timothy N Stelly Sr says:

The mental aspect of sexuality (and the historic, for that matter) is understated if not forgotten. We seem to have forgotten that nudity is our natural state, but we have been bombarded with so much sex imagery that we have not only become insensitive to vulgarity, but accept it as the norm. I would argue that for most there is no tenderness or psychological comfort in being nude; that we have been brainwashed (for lack of a better term) into thinking that nudity=sex, lust. Hence, I’ve always said that a woman’s greatest asset is a man’s imagination. When I first espoused that, I was nineteen. I always believed that nudity or the prospect thereof should do more than conjure up scenes of physical conquest, but that it can be whatever two people want it to be.

This BET Uncut generation, however, doesn’t view nudity and sexuality in terms of it being harmonious with nature. They see opportunities for reproduction without responsibility; breast milk with out the milk; a city for conquest.

I think back to the Latoya Jackson photos in Playboy, a magazine known for its objectifying of women. There was something about the Latoya photos that in my view, were tasteful rather than provocative. Then again, the title of the magazine, however, gave away the publisher’s true intent, as do other such magazines like Jugs and Black Tail that objectify women as “jugs” and “tail” and little else. Perhaps Essence
would be better suited as the title of a magazine examining pictorially the sexuality of black women.

As for the photo of you, in my view, it is a masterpiece. The eyes radiate honesty, as do the words that accompany it.

  20. Bill Stimson says:

I misread “bringing me to a new level of awareness” as “begging me to a new level of awareness” — and I like the word “begging” because I feel your photo cries out that the sensuality of our body begs us to give in to a higher existence, one not merely cerebral, or doctrinal — but lived with fullness and true. Yes, naked is sexy in this picture, but what shines through the sexiness is the the lovely person and serious artist.

Many years ago on one of the Long Island beaches, I think it might even have been Jones Beach, down way farther than the public area, I was walking along and all of a sudden was so overwhelmed by the big sky, clouds, the wondrous breeze, the smell of the sea, the sand at my feet, and the gulls overhead, that I took off my bathing suit and began running naked. I ran and ran and ran, past people, past fishermen, past picnickers, past empty stretches, until I saw I was coming upon the public area where children were playing. I slipped my bathing suit back on. It was sexy, very, but I wasn’t sexually aroused, not in a genital way. Rather, my whole spirit felt it had become nakedly one with the universe.

True, there is nothing private about sexuality. It’s how we touch another most deeply and truly, most nakedly. And yet nothing could be more private – sexuality is the sharing of our deepest privacy. Good writing is the same. In a great masterpiece the boundary between private and public evaporates, the two realms merge.

What shows in the picture? Well, what strikes me immediately is the sweetness — the sweetness of the Pittershawn I remember from Booz-Allen & Hamilton, all day in front of her computer, but with a mind more alive than any of those around her. To see her revealing herself so true like this touches my heart, because it verifies what I always felt — this woman has something in her that is special and she is willing to take risks to find what it is and make others feel it. Congratulations!

I love to walk around my house nude.Sometimes I stay naked all day. I used to always wonder why I felt like this. When I was younger I used to think I was strange when it is only my natural state of being. Life is so material and the true essence of who we are is so distorted we disconnect from what is natural. It is a shame that people don’t realize the beauty in their own bodies. When I am in my birthday suit I feel like the baby I was before I knew what clothes were!

  24. Aaron Duncan says:

Pittershawn first I must admit I was taken aback by the photo but after reading your post I realize that I had to take a second look. Frankly being the typical American contemporary male sure my first thoughts were not worth speaking of hence having been raised in an environment where nudity is thought of as sexual primarily and artisticly second or even further. In both sex and art the nude body is admired and often well received depending on the opinion of the person looking. If we look at nudity from a cultural perspective it takes on a whole different rationale dependent upon the outlook of the people of the region. Most of what we would call primitive cultures such as the yanomano in the Amazon or some of the African tribes would view it as commonplace as we do a person with clothing on. It is not unnatural or even overtly sexual to them but just the way things are. Here as well as in most so called advanced societies we have polluted the thoughts of what God has naturally made and turned it from beauty into perversion. With this in mind the apotheosis of what you are saying and presenting is true that yes some do have hangups on things sexual and have yet to find a key to unshackling this portion of their cognitive or developmental reasoning. In the mature sense most of us fit into that category but are unwilling to admit it. One can easily take the high road and say that we saw at first the intrinsic value or position that you are taking but if we born here in this society were to be real and honest our minds detracted to places we can only admit to if we looked into the mirror. I admire the fact that you brought this idea out into the open but will even more admire if those who respond would acknowledge what they thought with honesty and not simple b.s. keep it real.

  25. Bx King says:

Dayumm…I’m soo with you on this!!

I definitely agree with you, Pit. Sexuality, sensuality, our very perception of the way we view life has been altered. Today, as it stands, the human body, unless it’s to be looked at from a clinical stand point, is to be hidden & kept as an ugly secret. We have hundreds of ways to clothes us, cover us, and to hide what we look like. Many of the masses are made to believe that nakedness is something should only take place in the dark or in a room full of deviants that share the same interest.

That natural feeling of appreciation a man gets when he sees a beautiful woman or vice verso has been twisted by conditioning to make one feel dirty, tainted, or even somewhat perverse. We are conditioned early in our youth to make sure that we understand even tho it’s stated that one should be aware of the beauty that surrounds us, we can only do so if that beauty does not involve the naked body.

I have always felt that there was always something not quite right with the teachings of my instructors when it came to understanding human sexuality. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a freak and I’m not into multiple partners and I don’t feel that it’s my place to pass judgment on those that choose that lifestyle. I do know that I have always been one to appreciate the freedom of woman who can express herself through her words, her thoughts, her movements. I feel that you were right when you said, ‘Sexuality is about our connection to the universe and how that connection affects us on this plane of existence.’ This is something that needs to be shared and to be discussed in an open forum with Kings and Queens that have both open and closed minds. We need to share comments and ideas on how we develop our sexuality and our spirit without the burden of society limiting us to a dimly lit hotel room.

It’s funny how back in the day, as a baby, everyone around you didn’t have any issues at all walking around you in the buff. LOL..now I’m not saying that we all need to go toss out our clothes, but I am saying that there is a certain level of innocence that’s been lost. As you grew, your aunts, uncles, cousins, everyone around you had to make sure that you were clothed as well as they were. The insecurities start early. They run deep. We as individuals have to to find a way to do away this never ending loop of conditioning that not only kills our freedom but always stifles our culture as well.

Pit…I thank you for sharing your thoughts with me on a topic that has as much controversy as it does passion. I’ve known you for quite some time now (too long maybe) and I have to say that I love your endless spirit. And your natural beauty still knows no boundaries. You were never one of the drones that made up the masses. You always had insight to ask questions that always provided entertainment yet invoked a search for enlightenment. Sorry I gave u a run on sentence on your comment section but you know ..lol. I tend to do that.

Oh yeah.. as for the weak minded individuals that will do their best to attack you and your post, it’s because of who they are and what they do that tends to drive us to be our best. Since they feel the need to question you and what you do; that is partially why you’ve elevated to the level of enlightenment where you are right now. They will try to ridicule and test you. Please don’t ever feel that what you need to say or express has to be curtailed or censored because of what a lame individual might say or do. Keep up the good work, Pit. i look forward to more of your posts. Lata Queen! uhm..sorry bout the 345,356,516 words.

Sister…..sister…..my sister……you could have given me a specific warning about what I was about to see….LOL. but anyway…..my sister….to me you have always been beautiful…..whether within the confines of clothes or the free display of your full physical being. Your nature (or spirit) has always been so strong and so powerful that your beauty shines through regardless of your physical manifestation. You are right….the soul wears no clothes and yours never has. You have always been open, free and nakd with your opinions, beliefs and sage advice. The physical aspect of your being that you have chosen to display to the masses in order to provoke the right minded way of conceiving the real world in which we live…..is merely an extension or physical manifestation of who you always have been. I acknowledge the fact that your spirit has always spoken to all the masses that would listen and I admire this effort to reach out and educate the ones who would not. I am and always have been, proud of your boldness, your vision and your spirit and am constantly ispired by your innovation. From a brother to his sister….I am proud of you and your constant ability to be a catalyst for enlightenment. 27. Spirituality for me has always been an individual thing that has forced me to leave behind past notions, friends, beliefs and ideas. I have always longed to be free and have never been freer than I am now at 45. I believe that’s part of the reason my husband calls me his little exhibitionist. I think especially in marriage and relationships if women and men were more in tune with themselves and comfortable with their bodies we would be happier and more at peace. I know that we can’t ignore that a not so subtle brainwashing is taking place but I believe that we can detach and untangle ourselves from the outlets that we plug into and not let it infiltrate our psyche. My goal to run free on 10 acres of tall grass. I smile and I can only imagine how many hits this post alone has gotten and how many people have logged on just to uncover your nakedness and how your very poignant message just went over their heads.

  28. Jolie du Pre says:

Well, I guess I should get this fact out of the way now – you’re extremely beautiful. If I was taken aback at all – it is because of that.

I wear clothes only when I have to because I find clothes an annoyance. I don’t sleep in them. I rarely wear underwear. I’m a full-time writer, so I work at home. I would *not* wear clothes if I didn’t have children in the house.

American culture views nudity different than other cultures. (We also have a f*cked up view about sexuality.) I’ll be in France in three days, and I’m sure I’ll see a number of women topless. No big deal over there.

Your words are true and I deeply appreciate their intent. My only wish is that more women appreciated their bodies.

It saddens me that so many women have been pushed, manipulated, into disliking their bodies. Can you image, not loving the skin you’re in?

I think as women who are open-minded and feel true love (love for yourself which naturally extends to the world), it’s our duty to spread this word to our sisters, mothers, daughters and friends.

Every woman should embrace her true sensuality/sexuality and not be embarrassed or ashamed.

In most complex art, clarity or understanding of what is displayed is a task put to our own imagination for us to get out of it what it means to us. It is obvious that you are a work of art on many levels that I couldn’t begin to articulate, so I’ll save myself the embarrassment of trying. Suffice it to say, a work of art so aesthetically sound (you) tugs at a deeper understanding and appreciation. To have reached a degree of awareness that you have speaks volumes as to the character of Pittershawn. I can only assume having achieved such enlightenment must have great rewards of its own. 33. Hey Pittershawn

You know how I can be late on stuff, but I am so glad I caught a page of missed emails today cleaning out my gmail box to see you send me to this blog. I would have missed this otherwise! I know you said to have my back in the email, but I was actually waiting, with all the beautiful photos you take and what you are all about anyway, too see you pose nude. I’m glad you are so fierce! Now let have your back on this one.

You know I think you’re a genius anyway, and just too unfortunately pushed out right now with your voice. But I’ve read this and agree with your point that the same activists who will spend time on wars and famines in other countries will not turn their attentions towards the horrendous predicament of Black women in this country seen as sex objects- who are not sexy. Tenacity, resilience and blessed fitness and health after childbirth is too much for them in this photo; you’re basically displaying the spirit of Black women as those around the world who have the strongest bodies, period, that are still in the optimal form that God gave you. You are beautiful! I have a small screen, so I had to scroll down to see where your border cut off! But some writing that I just lost on my computer, that I can send you some of it, basically argues that it is time to STOP even expecting anybody to get it. It is time for us to reclaim our natural perch as the Queens of this world’s Jungle (in the Upton Sinclair sense, seriously): we are lionness in this world. The sexy, coquettish, quietly powerful beasts who tame it all for our “prides.” Activism has even become “global,” with Black women here still suffering expected to sit still and quiet over what is still happening here. I agree with you. The world created for us by the Creator has really stripped Black women of the right to have sex detached from emotion and spirit with us while we are the most closely associated with it sexuality. Perhaps a natural hair/”nude” photo revolution is the solution over doing another wave of feminism asking for equal rights. It’s played. At least this revolution will fire up some interests once they want the photos to be torn down because they are so hot computers around the world are burning up. Headed to NYC in September. Maybe a similar photo shoot can be organized with multiple women! Hey, I do believe in trying new things, so….Anyway, hope the Knowledge Gathering goes well this weekend. And I am trying desperately to get back to New York City at the end of next year! Love love love love you! Kalisha

WOW! To say you are art is to have no concept of what art is.
Lady, you are an entirely new definition of the concept. A dazzling
portrait of a truly gorgeous woman. As for your article – so very true.
So many people have confused, re-defined & corrupted sexuality and even

are all but gone. And we are not the better for it.

  35. Mr. Lacy says:

We are living in a very expressive age. Sexuality and art go hand and hand. Even though man through the times has grossly contorted the meaning of sex, there are some out there who really enjoy it from an artistic standpoint.

We are all guilty of some sort of mental/physical perversion of sex itself. But I respect the fact that there are some, who can express themselves freely with absolutely no signs of having to struggle with what others may think or say.

You have certainly illustrated the beauty of freedom and artistic expression with your wonderful write and alluring pic.
