learning to play the guitar

guitar.JPG

I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar. I purchased one a few years ago, but still have not gotten around to taking lessons. As you can see, it still looks practically new. Just goes to show how many times I’ve touched it.

Although I play the piano and have a clear understanding of music, the guitar feels different. I am able to pluck a few strings and bring some childhood sounds to life, like Mary Had a Little Lamb; but to really bring the instrument to life is another story.

I look at it each day and wonder why I haven’t more aggressively ventured into learning to play. When I hear sisters like India.Arie and Tracy Chapman playing, I long for the ability to do what they do…which is create an amazing sound with such a seemingly simple instrument. Lenny Kravitz, another talented guitar player, among the many instruments he plays, also brings the unique sounds of the instrument to new levels.

My fondest experience with the guitar/bass (yes, I’d love to play the bass as well) is in the song “Hotel California” by The Eagles. The guitar soloist on that track near the end was possibly the wickedest player of his time. I recently learned the track was originally named “Mexican Bolero.”

I am hopeful that I will begin learning soon. Time waits for no one. So I will need to make a move if I am to become adept at playing. Otherwise, my guitar will continue to look new, with a few layers of dust covering its barely used frame.

I hope you one day learn to play the guitar Ms. Palmer. I hope you never stop writing the words that is music to our mind, your words are the strings that illuminate our world. And even though you do not as yet play the guitar your words help us imagine the beauty that we all want to hear.

Now I know why we have not gotten the sequel to your book, When We Were One, practicing on the guitar. Please put down that dam guitar and get me that second book. Do not force me to come up there and do what Kathy Bates did in the movie Misery. I would not want to break those Beautiful feet that you posted in a previous post just to get you to write the sequel. I have been in Misery waiting for the other book, so get back to writing.
