time to write

There is never any time to write.  Isn’t that what we often say?  There is always a bill to pay, a child to feed or deliver to the steps of a school, a husband to pamper, a cat’s litter to change, a floor to mop, furniture to dust, hair to wash, this to do and that to fix, all in the span of an evening or morning.  When all is said and done, and everyone is attended to, the night is over, it is 11pm, and sleep is calling, the time to write has passed. Right?

How does a writer find time to write?

I’ve discovered that the best way is to compromise in some areas and never compromise my writing.  My writing must be as important as everything else in my life. Writing is that shower I must take, the teeth I must brush, the deodorant I must use. We do these things without a second thought because we know they are necessary. Writing is a necessity for me as well.

I want to be good at what I do.  Just as I need to eat to live, I write to equally survive this embattled world tettering on the edge of madness. Writing calms the world, makes it manageable. And if nothing else, provides an outlet not only for me, but for my readers. Writing is the elixer of my life.  It is the means by which I share new truths and revelations, as well as a tiny corner of my mind…that place where the average person fears roaming.

I will write at midnight or at 5am—at twilight or at dawn.  I will write when the world is quiet, or, if need be, amongst the hustle and bustle of a city park or a neighborhood coffee shop.  There is always time to write.  I cannot make excuses.

If writing is indeed a gift from the universe, then I cannot dishonor that gift with excuses.  I will write when it is time to write, at any moment, without compromise.  The great writer lurking within me can only come forth through writing daily. So, I will write…
