sunday afternoon

It’s a warm day today. Almost too warm for November. I’m able to go outside without a coat and enjoy the sun. The air has virtually no chill and the sky is cloudless. A great day to ponder deeply the existence of humans.

Age old questions come to mind. How have we come to be here and why? I believe that those who answer the quickest know the least of our existence. They will regurgitate what they have been taught by science or religion. But in the end, it never gives anything concrete. If it did, there would be no discussion. The question would fall in the realm of gravity. If one jumps off a cliff, they know what will happen; there is nothing to argue. It is a basic truth understood here on earth, in this atmosphere.

But the questions of our existence aren’t so easily put to rest. It is clear, then, that we have no real understanding of our how and why. Many a person has fought and died believing in the right of their position…often willing to kill for that position. But the sword is not needed to prove gravity. All that is needed is to leave the seeker to his or her own devices. The truth of the matter will either awaken and enlighten them, or kill them, no intervention necessary.

What conclusions have we come to about our existence that cannot be argued? What do we really know? If anything at all. These questions remain. They travel with us through what is considered time. And through what we know as space. All the while, it rubs us sometimes raw. For many others still, they carry no anxiety around not knowing. They realize that with each moment, something new will eventually surface. But for now, not knowing does not stop us from living.

So what do we do?

I say we live. We live the best way we know how. No pretense. No force or interference. Leave people and nature to unfold as it has been for as long as we have existed. Let each thing exercise its right to live, and live with nature, absent all the machinations that have been created to keep us from living simply; no more enslavement. No control over the land that was made for all of us. Just live and let life teach us how and why we are.

These are the things I ponder on this lovely sunday afternoon.
