something different week 1: our world

Sunday, November 29th, 2009
This entry is part 1 of 32 in the series Something Different Series

Imagine something different about a single piece of knowledge about us or our world. It can be in science, biology, archaeology, anthropology, history, astronomy, psychology, etc. Consider that what you’ve been taught as fact about this piece of knowledge is not fact at all. Imagine a different theory about this piece of knowledge.

My piece of knowledge: We are taught that the sun heats the earth. What if this isn’t what is happening?

Theory: What if it is the molecules impacting each other; molecules from the sun’s rays impacting the molecules in our atmosphere. This impact is what actually heats the earth, rather than the surface chemical activity from the surface of the sun.

Consider this: If the sun heats the earth, then why is it that when we go higher into mountains, which are literally closer to the sky, and thereby closer to the sun, does it get colder?

Why is it that during the times of the year when certain parts of the planet are closer to the sun it gets colder? And, on a hot summer day, when a shuttle heads into our atmosphere, does the temperature drop to temperatures that do not even exist on earth? Yet, those shuttles pass far closer to the sun?

If the sun heats the earth, then why does it, in every scenario, get colder the closer ge get to it? Could my theory of molecule interaction be possible? The higher one gets up into the mountains, the thinner the air gets; less molecules, thereby not enough sun rays (molecules) to bounce off to cause friction, and thereby heat. In space there are virtually no molecules. Could that be the reason why it is so cold in space, no matter if one is nearer the sun?

What if this theory is plausible and the sun, by itself, carries no heat at all, but only the potential to create heat when it encounters an abundance of molecular bodies? Or matter?

Share your piece of knowledge and an alternate theory.

Think Different, Imagine Possibilities

The next 30 weeks, I hope, are going to be exciting. The Sunday posts for my 30 Week, Think Different, Imagine Possibilities series will be geared toward engaging readers to be more intellectually interactive and critically think. Join me as I unfold my 30 week series of interactive questions and challenges that stretch the imagination and challenge the spirit.

Beginning this sunday, stop back to see what is posted for the first week. Can’t wait to read the comments that will come from this 30 week adventure. Sign up to receive a message when a new blog is posted so you won’t miss the 30 week journey.

something different week 2: memory

Sunday, December 6th, 2009
This entry is part 2 of 32 in the series Something Different Series

Remember 20-30 years ago you could remember the phone numbers of almost all your friends and family members? And even some co-workers? This list of numbers housed in your memory could easily reach more than 20 people. Think about it, now that you have all these crutches, can you even remember 5 phone numbers? Add to that all the other things you once housed in your memory, including account numbers, stories, directions, ingredients, and a host of things we now use crutches for.

3 Day Challenge:

Day 1: Pick 5 things you want to commit to memory. Write them down and begin the task of memorizing them. It can be 5 phone numbers. Maybe a short poem, the license plate number of a stranger, an account number from one of your bills, anything. How about you look up directions to someplace no more than a mile away, a place you’ve never been, and commit the directions to memory. On day 4, drive to that place from memory. Begin memorizing your list of 5 items.

Day 2: Continue to memorize your list without looking at it the entire day. Near the end of the day, take a last look at your list to ensure you have most items memorized.

Day 3: Continue to memorize your list with only periodic glances to ensure you’ve correctly remembered your 5 items.  Just before bedtime, destroy the list.

Day 4: Return to the blog and share your outcome. Don’t feel bad if you didn’t do well. This culture was designed to make you dependent. If the items aren’t too personal, from memory, share a couple of them here. If you memorized a poem, share it with me.

My List:

1. Memorize a short poem
2. Memorize a bill account number
3. Memorize a recipe
4. Memorize a random license plate number
6. Memorize the number to someone I call infrequently

something different week 3: flying

Sunday, December 13th, 2009
This entry is part 3 of 32 in the series Something Different Series

If you could fly, where would you go and what would you do?

If I could fly, I would fly to every corner of the planet and stay for at least 6 months to experience the culture. I would communicate to all who I meet the experience of flying.

Share your imaginary flying adventure.

something different week 4: not alone

Sunday, December 20th, 2009
This entry is part 4 of 32 in the series Something Different Series

Imagine you are not alone in the universe. Imagine that like us, other entities also do not yet have the technology to travel the cosmos. Let’s say you are out there, on another world, and you knew for a fact that other entities existed. What do you imagine you would be thinking/imaging about those entities?

One of the many things I would wonder: Are they more intelligent than we are? And what that means as far as how they live and interact with each other.

What are your thoughts?

something different week 5: night sky

Sunday, December 27th, 2009
This entry is part 5 of 32 in the series Something Different Series

Go outside on a cloudless night and count as many stars as you can in 2 minutes. Those stars are nothing more than what we call the sun in our solar system. Suns of different sizes and distances.

Remember the amount of stars you counted.

Sixty minutes divided by 2 is 30. Calculate 30 times the amount of stars you counted in that 2 minutes. That is the approximate amount of stars you would have counted, given a steady rate of counting, had you counted for one hour.

Share that number with me.

Now consider that those are only the stars (or suns) visible to the eyes. Imagine further that each one of those suns has 9 planets rotating around them. Of course, there could be less planets, or much more depending on the size of the sun, or other factors we have yet to detect or intellectually consider.

Imagine that only one of those planets within each sun system contains life. It is possible that all planets within any given sun system could house life.

What thoughts come to mind when you consider this possibility?

something different week 6: listen to your body

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010
This entry is part 6 of 32 in the series Something Different Series

Tonight, when having dinner, don’t talk. Ensure you’ve prepared something than can be eaten with your hands. Feel the food between your fingers, connect with it as you connect with an apple while eating it with your hands. Eat very slowly. Be aware of the food going down your throat. Try to feel it going all the way through you. Get in touch with the process your body goes through when you ingest each morsel of food. What is your stomach saying? What are your organs saying as your body begins to digest and move through your system. Be still and listen. Let your body speak to you. Let the vibrations of each food tell you a story.

Tell me, what did it say?
